Chick Football

Football gets in touch with its feminine side: The Philadelphia Liberty Belles are one of 10 charter members of the National Women’s Football League. The 45-woman team, which plays on high school fields and travels by bus, has romped over its first three opponents in an eight-game schedule that runs from April to June. The players buy their own uniforms, pay their own insurance, and raise money with car washes. And they don’t earn a cent, despite their ass kicking performace. So far the Belles have schlacked three opponents by a combined score of 106-6. I’ve never seen them play, but I imagine it being quite an entertaining experience; not just because its women, but because they’re genuinely in love with the game of football. Some day, when and if they become profitable, the league might lose that quality, so I hope to catch a game soon…

  1. I have just found your site and would like to update you on the Philadelphia Liberty Belles.

To begin with, we don’t play on a high school field, we’ve never had a car wash & the players never paid for their own liability insurance & uniforms.

The players and staff raise money to pay for uniforms that are property of the Philadelphia Liberty Belles. The players have to have their own health insurance to be a Liberty Belle player.

Although, your article was very supportive and we thank you.

The Philadelphia Liberty Belles are now members of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL). We begin our first season with this league in April 2003. This league allows every owner to have input on the season, unlike the other league we were in.

The IWFL is also an International League and is growing every year. The professionalism of this league is a “breath of fresh air”. We ALL work together, league staff, owners & staff of each team to get us ALL through the season. That’s TRUE teamwork.
