Ok, so now that we've all been approved for the new forum, I thought I'd let you in on some of the new features that are available, and some that will be available in the near future.

First, as you have no doubt noticed, everyone has a customizeable profile. You can reference an image of yourself and you can even reference an icon that will be used in the discussions (sort of like the 4thkingdom icon, but you don't have to buy these).

One note about that - if you can't find a place to host the image, or you want to use an image on a site other than Kaedrin or your own, just send it to me (tallman_at_kaedrin.com) and I can host it for you:)

I'm looking into the style system they have for this thing, which is interesting. I may be able to get my masthead up. In any case, I eventually expect to have at least a few different styles for the forum - and you'll be able to choose which one you want!

Other stuff to note is that there are several things in the left navigation that allow you to save searches, bookmark posts, and otherwise find certian posts. There's also a search (at the top of the page) that seems relatively comprehensive.

Some of you have discovered the "Whisper" feature, but I'm not sure I'm going to keep that. Any thoughts? We're all friends here, so I don't really see the need to hide stuff from one another:)

Also note that there are categories. Up until now, there's only been a "general" category. I just added one for "Cheese" and one for "Books, Movies, and Music."
I'll probably add some more once I get a chance to think about it a bit.

Another thing I've wanted for a while is the ability to put HTML in post (as opposed to BB code), and now we have it (though you do need to select the "Html" radio button before you post). Certain parts of HTML are not allowed (namely, javascript), but it should be fine for the standard stuff.

Another thing to note is the "Big Input" button on the upper right of the "Enter your comments" field. It makes the box you write comments in much larger, which is great for long posts like this:)

Anyway, while there are a few things I'd like to change about this thing, so far, it seems pretty good. What are your thoughts?

Oh some things I forgot to mention:

While there is only the default style for now, if you're really feeling frisky, you can make your own. Just go to your account settings page and you'll see a link in the left navigation that says "Change Stylesheet"

Also, in the Forum Preferences section, you can choose to always show the Big Input box and also to always format comments as HTML.

There's a bunch of things I'm not mentioning, so you can just play around as you please:)

I've only used the whisper function to coordinate some minor grand theft locomotive operations. I can always fall back on smoke signals if necessary. Seriously though, I doubt any of us would use the whisper function for anything serious. I mean, very serious affairs. All of it, always, yes.

I dig the forum so far. The features are cool, especially the customisable profile label/value thing. That one's cool in ways both mischevious and practical. And cheese is always a good category to have. O Cheese My Cheese.... Actually, the customisable stylesheet option is really cool. I don't know if I'll ever tinker around with it but having the option there is very groovy.

I give a hearty thumbs up.

    I'll be in my trailer.

Yes, I see you've taken advantage of some of the new features (I especially like the "Combat" profile picture). I haven't done much with the profile label/value thing, but you are certainly correct in that it's got a lot of potentially good/funny uses...

I'm definitely playing around with the stylesheets. In fact, you might notice that the styles are a little off right now... that's because I'm also playing with inserting the kaedrin masthead (i.e. logo and global navigation), and I need to play around with styles to get it to fit right. So far, I've got the ability to insert stuff just fine, I just need to make it look right. If you're really lucky, you'll see me playing around with it...

In the end, I hope to have a couple of different styles that you can choose from, in addition to being able to specify your own...

Trying to insert the masthead is somewhat annoying though. It turns out that I needed to write an extension, but luckily someone had already written one that basically did what I needed.

Anyway, yes, forum is groovy. Hopefully, I'll be able to replace the old forum in short order...

Is it possible to have staggered threads where you can reply to a particular person and have everyone read it, like at the old forum?
If more people posted on the Kaedrin forum, then not having staggered threads would be really annoying. So far, this format isn't a problem.

The whisper function is like a PM system integrated into the regular forum. It's not like people never have private conversations on the net, but it does feel strange to have it integrated into the open conversations.

I figured out why the text on my account page overlapped. I had put in a link to my livejournal, but the whole url didn't show up except when you clicked on it. That's when the whole url came into view, but it caused the other text to squish into itself. I'm thinking that's just something with my computer.

Yeah, that's one drawback to this forum style. Perhaps sometime in the future, this software would be able to do such a thing, but I don't think this one can... Fortunately, not that many people post here:P

Yeah, that's exactly what whisper seems like, but again, since we don't have many people here, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Also, it's not just your computer, I had the same problem when using firefox... it might be something I can fix with styles, but I'll have to play around with it...
